Music Forum
As part of a music based unit, students post thei opinions about a chosen German pop song and video clip.A good starting point for useful clips is the Step into German site. Students are also encouraged to collaborate by adding comments to each others music selections. I also hope to involve another school in the activity.

Ein interkulturelles Projekt
Using a Ning network called Treffpunkt to communicate with a class in Germany, students from both countries investigate elements of the everyday to share with the class. We found our class using the Epals website. The authentic context, sharing of pictures and the getting to know "real" speakers of German has been highly engaging and motivating for the students.

Liebe auf den ersten Blick
This activity followed on from a "speed dating" oral activity, which focussed on personal profile information with a particular focus on personal qualities, what is important in friendships and relationships. They received a picture and then created a profile for this person. Once their character was established, they had to do a speed dating role play in which they spoke to half the class for 2 minutes each to find out about them. After the speed dating role play, students then had to log into our Ning network as that character and make further contact with others, write to the Kummerkasten or discuss other issues about relationships in the discussion forum.

Oral Testing on Voicethread
Using Voicthread for oral tesing has been a great way of testing the whol class simultaneaouly. I recorded teh questions in German over a series of visuals and each student had to record their response onto each slide. Using the monitoring function, they were not able to hear each other's responses until afterwards.

Berlin - heute und gestern
This activity encourages students to think about what they know about Berlin, by using a series of visual images, and also to pose questions about them to further explore the topic of modern Berlin and historical Berlin. The link above takes you to a blank version of teh visuals. Students from 2 classes then responded to my questions, partly in writing and partly orally. It lead to much further discussion and really began t deepen their thinking.
